Jefferson Davis (1809-1889) was an American statesman and leader of the Confederacy during the Civil War until its collapse and his capture in 1865. Although accused of treason and put in prison, he later won back favor, dying a very popular man owing to his military service and positions in the U.S. House of Representatives.
