Antrim 1844's First Port Dinner |
|
Antrim Presents the
Ports of Taylor
Featuring Robert Bower
23rd February 2006
Six thirty in the Evening
~~~
The last of the original English founding port companies, Taylor's has managed to remain family owned. The same family has run the company for over 300 years ensuring that its outlook and philosophy remains focused one thing. Quality.
Peter Bearsley, one of the founding members of the firm, was the first Englishman to visit the Upper Douro to buy wines in the 1700's. This led to their first purchase of property in the Douro in 1744. During the Napoleonic wars, this property was used as a hospital for the Duke of Wellington's troops owing to the natural spring rising on the property. Those old buildings still stand today as a testament to Taylor's heritage.
Besides it's long history and tradition, Taylor's has always been an innovator and a pioneer when it comes to ports. They were the first to commercially release a single Quinta wine. They were the first to introduce a vintage reserve wine, a Late Bottle Vintage and a white port. Even though the methodology of extracting the fruit's sweet juice has remained the same throughout the centuries, Taylor's has remained at the center of all innovations to the port industry.
Taylor's heritage is also in its people. Robert Maurice Syndercombe Bower was born on the 3rd of June, 1975, in Oporto, Portugal. Raised in Portugal until he was 8 years old, he was then sent to England to continue his education. After Eton College he went on to Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, in London. At Imperial he graduated in Biology and, a year later, obtained a Masters in Molecular Biology and Virology.
After leaving university he worked for 3 years in Cambridge for the pharmaceutical company, Novartis, thereafter he decided to return to his true passion of port wine. Before returning to Portugal, he continued his education with marketing, language and wine tasting courses, both in the United Kingdom and France.
Robert Bower joined the port wine industry in the Spring of 2001. He is now the 7th generation of the Yeatman line through his grandmother to be involved with port wine. His responsibilities encompass the management of the Fladgate Partnership portfolio in the United States.
It is our pleasure to have Mr Bower present his family's heritage on Thursday, February 23, 2006 accompanied by a challengingly delectable menu, masterfully created by our award winning executive chef, Michael Gettier. Hors d'oeuvres and the first tasting will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by an introduction to the wines by mr. Bower around 7:00 p.m. and seating at approximately 7:30 p.m. We look forward to seeing everyone on the 23rd.
Josep h Phelps Wine Dinner |
|
A Tribute
to Joseph Phelps
| |
Wednesday, May 17th, 2006
Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps
Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena.
Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery
overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas
Mountains to the west.
Long known for his innovative spirit and passion
for quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of "firsts" in the early years of the
winery. The 1974 Insignia - released in the spring of 1978 - was the first
Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. The
release of the 1974 Syrah in 1977 sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable
French varietal whose plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually
forgotten for over half a century.
A native Marylander, Mike McEvoy
moved west to join Joseph Phelps Vineyards as Director of Marketing in 2003 and
in December 2005 was promoted to Vice President and Director of Sales. Mike is
responsible for sales and distribution of JPV wines in all 50 states and the
District of Columbia. His fifteen years of marketing and management experience
prior to joining JPV included positions with Legg Mason, Sylvan Learning Systems
and Thomson Corporation in Baltimore.
It is our privilege to host this
dinner and to be able to present for your enjoyment a side-by-side tasting of
the 2001 & 2002 Insignia. The 2002 Insignia was the number one wine in the
Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2005. Our executive chef Michael Gettier has
prepared a scrumptious menu as a backdrop to these fantastic wines and we expect
this wine dinner to sell out very quickly.
Our tribute to the wines of
Joseph Phelps Vineyards is $125.00 per person inclusive, and will begin with
hors d'oeuvres and the first tasting at 6:30 p.m., followed by an introduction
from Mr. McEvoy at 7:00 p.m. and seating at approximately 7:30 p.m. For those
interested in staying the night, Antrim's deluxe accommodations have been nicely
discounted for wine dinner guests at the rates of $100.00 for Mansion rooms and
$150.00 for any suite. For a full room list with descriptions, visit our web
site at www.antrim1844.com. To make a reservation or for questions, please call
Charles Krug Dinner at Antrim 1844 |
|
The first winery in Napa Valley was founded in 1861 by Charles Krug, a 27-year old Prussian immigrant who became the major local winery figure of his era, greatly influencing Napa Valley's development as a world-renown wine-producing region. Upon his death, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, Italian immigrants themselves took over the winery and while maintaining the Krug name; they passed its traditions down the generations.
It was Peter Mondavi Sr. who through his efforts has made the winery what it is today. Current owners, Peter's sons Peter Jr. and Marc are continuing Peter Sr.'s innovative methods of cold fermentation and other pioneering methods in producing some of the Carneros regions best wines.
It is indeed a great privilege and tremendous honor for us to present you the wines of Charles Krug Peter Modavi Family and to introduce them we are delighted to have with us co-owner Marc Mondavi.
The eldest son of Peter and Blanche Mondavi, Marc was born in 1954 in St. Helena. He caught the family winemaking bug early in life, holding his first official winery position at age 10.
Marc studied viticulture and enology at the University of California, Davis, and marketing at California State University, Sacramento.
He returned to the winery in 1978 after his studies, at which time he immersed himself in every aspect of winery operations. He worked with his father to further his knowledge of winemaking, and applied the expertise he had acquired at UC Davis to the winery's numerous vineyard holdings.
Marc is active in the Wine and Food Society of San Francisco, and has served as secretary and member of the board of the Winery Workers Pension Fund and a past president of the Winery Employers Association. He is also a member of Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs - L'Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs. He has also served on the boards of the Wine Institute and the California Wine Commission, and was logistics chairman for the Napa Valley Wine Auction in 1988 and 1989.
Please join Antrim 1844 in welcoming this revolutionary wine-making family to our Smokehouse Restaurant for a night of indulgence in the best wines from Charles Krug and the perfect paring of food by Executive Chef Michael Gettier. The price will be $98 per person with a special room rate for those looking for overnight accommodations. As space is limited please call us for reservations - 1-800-858-1844. December 6th at 6:30pm.
| Castello Banfi Estate Dinner at Antrim 1844 |
A stroll down the Champs Elysées these days might offer the surprising sight of Parisians sipping Castello Banfi Brunello or SummuS in their sidewalk cafés. It may be even more surprising to see wine lovers doing the same in the upscale bistros of Phnom Penh, Bombay, Warsaw and Moscow.
Yet it's easily understandable to Cristina Mariani, family proprietor of Castello Banfi, Montalcino, Tuscany.
Castello Banfi is a rarity among Italian wine estates, not just because of its size, its composition of single vineyards, or its state-of-the-art winery, but because it was started from scratch less than 20 years ago. Most of the land was covered with forest and brush when the Mariani family found it; nevertheless, they recognized that the site was exactly what they had been searching for.
John and Harry Mariani, successful American importers, joined forces with Italy's leading enologist, Ezio Rivella; their objective was to produce top-quality wine on a scale never before attempted in Italy.
The Castello Banfi estate is a constellation of single vineyards. These include the award-winning Poggio all'Oro (36 acres of Brunello), Tavernelle (243 acres of Cabernet Sauvingon), Mandrielle (43 acres Merlot), Belnero (30 acres of Pinot Noir), Colvecchio (30 acres of Syrah), Fontanelle (100 acres of Chardonnay), Serena (30 acres of Sauvignon Blanc) and San Angelo (243 acres of Pinot Grigio).
We are proud to have John Mariani's Grandson, William J. Whiting with us this evening to present his family's heritage. Mr. Whiting is Wine Education Manager of Banfi Vintners and in his role he has tailored and implemented comprehensive presentations around the world to showcase Castello Banfi and it's unique position in Montalcino.
As always, Our Executive Chef, Michael Gettier has put together a unique presentation of his own to highlight the Mariani Family's prized selections. Due to the exclusivity of the featured wines, our Catello Banfi dinner will be $98.00 per person inclusive, and seating will be limited to 50 guests only, so please make your reservation early to ensure a table. Hors d'oeuvres and the first tasting will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by an introduction to the wines by Mr. Whiting around 7:00 p.m. and seating at approximately 7:30 p.m. To make a reservation or for questions, please call Antrim at (800) 858-1844, or from Baltimore, call us at (410) 876-0237. We look forward to seeing everyone on the 8th!
| Margo van Staaveren Wine Dinner at Antrim 1844 |
Recently promoted winemaker Margo van Staaveren has played a pivotal role in every facet of the winemaking process at Chateau St. Jean dating back to 1979. A superb winemaker, she draws on the benefit of this vast experience to insure that all wines meet the highest standards of quality and consistency. Our credo, 'only the finest,' says it all," she explains. "From grapes to glass, Chateau St. Jean doesn't compromise on quality, and it shows in the wines." Margo attended University of California at Davis and received her degree in Fermentation Sciences in 1979. Shortly after graduation, she joined Chateau St. Jean as a Laboratory Technician. She became Assistant Winemaker in 1989 and was appointed Associate Winemaker in 2000.
Margo's attention to detail and vast knowledge of the Chateau St. Jean facility are invaluable assets. She has been instrumental in key decision-making roles involving the production of the Cinq Cepages Cabernet Sauvignon since the premier, 1990 vintage release. Of course our executive chef, Michael Gettier has prepared a magnificent menu (as usual) to accompany the incredible talent of Margo.
Our evening with Margo is $110.00 per person, including tax and gratuity. Hors d’oeuvres will begin at the traditional time of 6:30pm, followed by an introduction from Ms. Van Staaveren at 7:00pm, and seating at approximately 7:30pm. Antrim Completes Renovation of the Birnie-Annan House |
|
Antrim is pleased to announce the completion of the Birnie-Annan House, a late-1800s home just across the rolling lawn from the Mansion.
The beautiful double doors of the main building, the Birnie House, open to the entrance hall that boasts a hand-carved turned staircase exemplifying the architecture of the day. Located in the historic Main Street district of Taneytown, we are pleased to restore the home to its formal splendor and have guests enjoy it once again.
The house includes two formal living rooms with a gas fireplace and a DVD library. Five formal bedrooms boast wallcoverings and window treatments of the Victorian era with luxurious modern bathrooms, most with Jacuzzis. Two of the rooms have private sitting porches with views across the lawn to the Mansion.
Two of the rooms can be joined by a private staircase to create a spacious family suite that sleeps six people.
Two sumptuous suites in the Annan House, the private outbuilding behind the Birnie House, are now complete.
The first floor Amelia Room features a king size feather bed, double Jacuzzi tub and separate shower, gas fireplace and a sofa bed. This room is fully handicapped accessible.
The Elizabeth Suite has a 20-foot cathedral ceiling and is on the second floor with a private entrance. The room features a king size feather bed, double Jacuzzi tub and separate shower, gas fireplace, sofa bed, dressing room and a private deck
As a bow to modern day technology, each room in the Birnie-Annan House contains a TV, CD player, and a data port.
City Paper Lauds Antrim's Cuisine |
Here is what Baltimore's City Paper had to say about Antrim's Smokehouse Restaurant in a June, 2005 review:
Absolutely, this is a white-tablecloth affair but free of stuffiness and paced for pleasure over languid evening hours. The star attraction, though, is Michael Gettier, who earned a following in Baltimore with his work at the Orchard Inn, and (at) a namesake Fells Point restaurant. As Antrim 1844's executive chef, it's his constantly changing, precisely considered cuisine to which foodies flock.
Far from ordinary were the filet mignon, topped with Boursin cheese and accompanied by Madeira demi-glace, a luxurious, aromatic, and woodsy triumph; and the sublime duck in two fashions, confit of duck paired with sautéed foie gras of duck, served on a bed of lentils. The confit, slowly cooked in its own fat, offered up impossibly crispy skin and succulent meat; the foie gras was filthy rich.
Antrim 1844 turned out to be entirely worth the investment of time and money.
Antrim Rated One of Baltimore's Best Restaurants |
|
Once again, Baltimore Magazine named Antrim one of the top restaurants in the area. Here's what the February issue has to say:
Antrim 1844, 30 Trevanion Road, Taneytown, 800-858-1844. Expensive.
There could hardly be a better spot for a romantic weekend retreat than Antrim, an enormous antebellum mansion that's been lovingly restored by owners Richard and Dorothy Mollett. And since renowned chef Michael Gettier took over the kitchen some two years ago, the restaurant offers dining that's worth the drive alone. Enjoy butlered hors d'oeuvres by the fire in the antiques-appointed drawing room, then proceed to Gettier's six-course dinner, whose menu varies according to the market and season. Winter brings, say, a tiny grilled quail amuse followed by rich duck foie gras on brioche with scatterings of morel mushrooms and fried capers. After a salad of wild greens and a bracing intermezzo of berries in champagne, you'll be ready for a hearty dish of succulent braised short rib encrusted in horseradish or a meltingly tender fillet of Chilean sea bass topped with white corn and sauce moutarde. This is French country cooking at its best, accompanied by an encyclopedic wine list that boasts numerous treasures. Will you have room for the sampler tray of chef's desserts? If not, retire to the Pickwick Pub for a single-malt scotch or upstairs to your down-quilted featherbed. Sweet dreams.
A Tribute to the Benziger Winery-- Spetember 8 |
|
|
Started over two decades ago on an overgrown ranch in the Sonoma Mountains, the Benziger family produced their first wine in 1981 and immediately began winning over critics. Over the years, they have kept true to their vision of producing wines of uncompromised quality that reflect Sonoma County's incredible diversity.
In all, the winery produces three separate lines of their products. While each has won acclaim the Single Vineyard Wines division is particularly distinctive, as included in this grouping are wines that have been biodynamically farmed. This holistic approach to winemaking is similar to organic farming but goes a step further by requiring close attention to the forces of nature that influence the vine. Suffice it to say that these are probably the purest wines you will ever taste.
Only a handful of vineyards in the country pass the rigorous requirements to attain official biodynamic status, and we are very excited to be featuring the first biodynamic-certified wine in California history, the 2001 Tribute, as the highlight of this evening. This wine was produced in such limited quantities that Maryland only received nine cases, so once again Antrim is at the forefront of the latest industry innovations and we are honored to be able to offer our guests a taste of the future of wine.
We are delighted to welcome Kyle Cook, Benziger's East Coast representative. The first non-family member to join the Benziger staff, Mr. Cook's 20 years in the wine industry made him well-suited to join this remarkable company. Mr. Cook will explain in further detail the techniques and the benefits of biodynamic farming, as well as give us an introduction to each of the Benziger products we are sampling.
This tribute to the Benziger Family Winery is $98.00 per person inclusive. We will begin the evening with hors d'oeuvres at 6:30 p.m., followed by introductory remarks from Mr. Cook at 7:00 p.m. and seating at approximately 7:30 p.m. For those interested in spending the night, wine dinner guests can enjoy Antrim's luxurious accommodations at the special rates of $100.00 for Mansion rooms and $150.00 for suites.
Antrim Featured in New Civil War Novel |
|
|
Antrim figures prominently in Newt Gingrich's new historical novel, Gettysburg, A Novel of the Civil War. The former Speaker of the House of Representatives' novel offers an alternative version of actual history. In it, he and his co-author, William R. Forstchen create a scenario by which the Confederate Army, under General Robert E. Lee, could have prevailed in the critical battle of the Civil War. The authors spent a considerable amount of time actually visiting Antrim and researching the local area for the telling details that give the story a real ring of plausibility, if not truth.
In this story, Lee uses Antrim as his headquarters and many of his most important strategic decisions are set against the familiar backdrop of Antrim’s Drawing Rooms and grounds as well as the rooftop cupola, which provided an extraordinary bird's-eye view of the battlefields at Gettysburg.
Enthusiasts of historical novels in general and the Civil War in particular, especially those who may visited Antrim, will find many familiar details and an interesting what-could-have-been to ponder.
Lester Jay Stone Exhibition |
|
|
One of the mid-Atlantic regions most accomplished seascape and nautical painters, 92 year-old Lester Jay Stone, will exhibit a collection of his original oil and watercolor paintings at Antrim 1844. Through the end of September.
The focal point of this exhibition will be Lester Stones large oil painting of The America. The America was a keel schooner built in 1851 from a design by George Steers for John Stevens, commodore of the New York Yacht Club. She was 102 feet long and carried 5,263 square feet of sail. America won, on August 22nd, 1851, the Royal Yacht Club race around the Isle of Wight at Cowes, England, witnessed by Queen Victoria. Her prize was the handsome silver pitcher, which is now known as Americas Cup. America served on both sides during the Civil War, and was later owned by the U.S. Naval Academy.
Lester Jay Stones paintings are in many private, public, and corporate collections, including the permanent collections of the United States Capital Rotunda, the United States Naval Academy, and the United States Defense Department.
